Michael Mina and Ken Tominaga's PABU Opens in Downtown Boston

PABU Boston at Millennium Tower from Chefs Michael Mina and Ken Tominaga officially opens today, November 1! PABU is located on the second floor of the Millennium Tower in downtown Boston, right by the Downtown Crossing T station. The restaurant will be serving sushi, izakaya-style dishes, robata, hot pot, and plenty of cocktails and sake.

Chef Michael Mina was a fan of Chef Ken Tominaga's original restaurant, Hana, in Sonoma County, which opened more than 2 dozen years ago. They finally partnered for the opening of PABU in San Francisco, and the partnership continues since.

The cold plates section includes the "Happy Spoon Oyster", of which we got a whole tower of during the opening party.

Happy Spoon oyster (uni, ikura, tobiko, ponzu creme fraiche, $9)

Among the hot dishes, you'll find okonomiyaki, chawanmushi, seared foie gras and more. We tried the Chicken karaage (ginger-soy marinade, spicy mayo, $12)

During the party, we also had the lucky chance to see chef Ken Tominaga in action, breaking down a 240-lb blue fin tuna for our consumption (we didn't eat the whole thing, don't worry).

It was certainly fun to see him at work, and see the staff members carrying the heavy pieces back and forth from the kitchen.

The best part, though, of course, is being able to eat the freshly sliced toro!
PABU
There can never be too much toro!
PABU
I'm primarily a nigiri sushi and hand roll eater, but they do have sushi rolls for those who like those.

Since winter is definitely coming to Boston, you might want to check out the wagyu beef shabu shabu there, or the whole Maine lobster ryoshi-nabe (hot pot) - I know I'm looking forward to that one!
PABU
We only tried 3 cocktails during the party, but PABU actually has a pretty big cocktail list that looks quite interesting. I have my eye on the YAMATO (white rum, neisson blanc rhum, coconut, matcha, sesame, giffard banana liqueur, lime) next time I visit.
PABU
For dessert, we had the milk chocolate sesame custard, with black sesame sponge and candied cocoa nibs. A nice, light way to end the meal!
PABU
PABU will also be offering happy hour from 3-6pm with $6 hand rolls and more.

I already have my reservation booked for PABU so I can try their cocktails and the whole lobster hot pot. PABU is a welcome addition to Boston, which in my opinion still needs more Japanese restaurants. While the price is on the higher end, their happy hour is certainly affordable!
